Spiritual Formation

What is Spiritual Formation?

Spiritual formation is the lifelong process by which the Holy Spirit transforms us as individuals and a community of faith more and more into the image and likeness of Jesus Christ. Some people call this Christian Education. For us, spiritual formation is more than learning content. It’s a matter of allowing the Holy Spirit to work through content and experience to make us more the people God created us to be.

SPIRITUAL FORMATION GUIDING PRINCIPLES

First Presbyterian Church fosters spiritual formation by providing opportunities and experiences that allow us, individually and communally, to discern God’s call, to be transformed by the Holy Spirit, and to grow continually in active participation in the mission of Jesus for the sake of Allentown, the Lehigh Valley and the world. Through worship, study and service, spiritual formation at First Presbyterian Church seeks to:

  • Foster faithfulness to Jesus and God’s Word
  • Provide opportunities for Christian formation of children, youth, and adults
  • Build Christian community across all age levels
  • Engage the whole person – head, heart and hands
  • Equip parents and the congregation to fulfill baptismal vows
  • Support parents/guardians in their role as the primary spiritual nurturer of their children
  • Pursue learning through an integrated plan of study

SPIRITUAL FORMATION LEADERS & SAFE SANCTUARIES

We believe God equips all people with spiritual gifts and talents and calls us to use those gifts to further the work of God’s Kingdom on earth. Every time a child is baptized, our congregation promises to help parents raise and nurture their child in the ways of God. One way we can live out this baptismal vow is to serve as a spiritual formation leader. Many opportunities exist for members and friends of our congregation to serve as a leader of children, tweens, youth and adults. Is God calling you to use your gifts as a spiritual formation leader? Contact one of our staff to explore this possibility. All leaders who minister with children or youth in the life of our church must complete our Safe Sanctuaries training to help us do everything possible to keep them safe.
