Who We Are
 Inquirers’ Seminar

INQUIRERS’ SEMINAR FOR PROSPECTIVE NEW MEMBERS:                            2010 will be a pilot year for our Inquirers’ classes for those folks who are interested in learning about membership and/or have a desire to join First Presbyterian Church. Instead of a six-week Sunday morning series, we are moving to a one-day Saturday seminar-style format. Our next  seminar will be on Saturday, October 16, 2010 from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Child care will be available for infants through fifth graders. A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided. If you are interested in signing up for our January seminar, please contact Carol Kelly carol.kelly@fpcallentown.org.  or (610-395-3781 ext. 36).For those who are already members but would like to go through an experience like this one, please feel free to sign up too!

Who comes to Inquirers' Classes?

Newcomers who wish to learn more about the congregation. As the name implies, these classes are for people with questions about the congregation. Those who wish to make the commitment to discipleship are received into membership by the Session (the church’s governing body) at the end of the final class (Week Six).

People whose children or teenagers have become involved in our preschool, church school, Youth Club, or youth fellowships and who want to find out what opportunities for nurture and service there are for adults at First Presbyterian.

Non-member spouses, fiancés/ées, or friends of active members who wish to join their friend or loved one in church membership. Often, the ones who are already members will attend Inquirers' Classes along with their Inquirer friend or partner as a way of being supportive and also of "brushing up" on their own knowledge of the congregation.

Long-time visitors who have decided that they are now ready to unite with this congregation.

Inactive members of the congregation who wish to reactivate their membership and find out what has been going on in the church since they were last actively involved.

Older youth or youth who were previously confirmed in another congregation.

In short, Inquirers' Classes are for all sorts of people - and may be for you!

Inquirers' Classes are intended not only to impart information about the Presbyterian Church, but also - and just as importantly - to build friendships among the people who participate. (This is why we encourage even those who are already members of a Presbyterian congregation and are simply transferring their membership to participate in an Inquirers' series.) Topics to be covered include how Presbyterians view Scripture, why we worship as we do, how our church's form of government work, and how we express our faith as Presbyterians. One session will feature a tour of the church building, while another session includes an opportunity to meet the Education and Music Staff and introduces the class to the myriad occasions for worship, nurture, fellowship and service at First Presbyterian.
