Who We Are
About First Presbyterian Church of Allentown

 What Is the Presbyterian Church?

First Presbyterian Church of Allentown was founded in 1831 and is a member of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), a Protestant denomination.  Presbyterianism grew out of the Reformation movement of the 16th century in Europe and takes its name from the Greek word presbuteros, which means “elder.”  Our name reflects our form of government, which stresses the concept of representative rule by the elected elders of the congregation under the authority of Scripture and guided by the Holy Spirit.  Numbering over 2.5 million members in all 50 states and Puerto Rico, Presbyterians are committed to proclaiming the good news of the Gospel of Jesus Christ through worship, education, fellowship, and service to the community and around the world.

 Children's Ministry

CHILDREN find a loving and nurturing environment within First Presbyterian.  On Sunday mornings, we offer nursery care for infants and toddlers.  Sunday Church School classes for children aged 3 through grade 6 are led by teams of experienced teachers.  Tuesday afternoons during the school year, Youth Club combines choir, Bible study, recreation, and supper fellowship for children in grades 1-6.  Throughout the summer, we have a combined Sunday morning education program for children aged 4 through completed grade 5.  Summer Vacation Bible School is an exciting week with Bible stories, music, crafts, and recreation for five mornings.

 Youth and Young Adults

YOUTH are such an important part of First Presbyterian’s life that they have their own weekly newsletter to keep them informed about activities for Junior and Senior Highs. Sunday mornings offer separate Church School classes for grades 7, 8, and Senior Highs (grades 9-12).  Confirmation Class for interested 9th-12th graders also takes place on Sunday mornings. Sunday evenings during the school year, our youth meet for Junior High and Senior High Fellowship, preceded by rehearsal of our Youth Choir (grades 7-12).  Weekdays offer a youth Handbell Choir.  In the summer, our youth participate in “Mission Mornings,” travel to workcamps out of the area as well as biennially to the national summer Youth Conference at Montreat Conference Center in North Carolina, and continue to meet weekly for Junior and Senior High Fellowships and other events designed to meet the spiritual, social, and educational needs of youth.

 Adult Ministry

ADULTS find numerous opportunities for education, nurture, fellowship, and service.  Sunday Morning Adult Education classes range from large seminar classes, often taught by area college and seminary professors, to smaller groups focusing on Bible study and issues of faith in our daily life.  There are a number of groups meeting throughout the week, both during the day and at night, which allow adults to pursue further study, come together for fellowship, and serve the community around us.
