In 1958, First Presbyterian Church of Allentown moved from their downtown location to the current site at Tilghman St. and Cedar Crest Blvd. The church had many young families who were interested in a weekday preschool program.
At this point in time, St. Paul Lutheran Church was the only other preschool in the area.
The young families petitioned the Session in May of 1966 and the Weekday Preschool was approved. At the Session's request, TIneke van Gelder was asked to take the leadership role as director of the Preschool Program.
Within 3 short months, Tineke had organized a staff of four teachers, ordered the materials and designed the curriculum for two pre-kindergarten classes, three mornings per week. As soon as the doors opened, the classes quickly filled.
Over forty years later, our program is still flourishing. First Presbyterian Church continues to serve our congregation and the community with a loving and nurturing early education program. Our Weekday Preschool staff is comprised of twelve experienced teachers with diverse backgrounds and teaching experiences. We currently offer seven classes, educating over eighty preschoolers annually.
We welcome you to come join us, and help us continue our tradition of providing a safe, nurturing environment, for your preschool aged child to grow and learn.
